Another new monthly list! Book Picks for various occasions. Since it’s November and most people are going away on Holiday, making Thanksgiving plans, or just trying to keep warm in general, I’ve come up with several great books for each occasion!
Avoiding the In-laws
The Thirteenth Tale
Good old school, Daphne du Maurier style gothic suspense. I recommend this book to anyone who is going on a flight or visiting relatives who just talk and talk and talk. You get trapped in Sutterfield’s world and she will not let you out until you are finished. Amazing story.
The Twelfth Enchantment
Magic, mortals, period-piece England, and a casanovesque Byron. What more could one ask for in this dramatic novel by David Liss? I remember reading this on a very bad weekend and after about 10 pages it was like nothing else outside of this book existed. It was a great read and one that stole my breath away in anticipation.
Warm & Steady
Shades of Milk and Honey
I see illusions of Jane Austen’s writing style in Shades of Milk and Honey. It is a great book and one that truly grows with repeated reading. I think it is really charming, a short read, and is exactly what I love: historical romance with a hint of magic.
The Shipper News
PP Winner 1994. A fascinating book, according to one of my favorite readers, my older and stubborn sister. Amazing setting, amazing characters, and really unique writing style. Not much of a beginning/middle/end type plot, just a very broad slice of life from these characters.
