As an author who loves Austen and writes reimagined histories, it surprises no one that I’m writing two Regency-inspired series. So, let’s dive into this Regency era rabbit hole together!

When Is the Regency Era?

The Regency era of British history, a subset of the Georgian era, covers c. 1795 to 1837 CE. This includes the last 25 years of George III’s reign, the Regency, and the reigns of George IV and his brother William IV. 

Why is it called the Regency Era?

The Regency Era is named after Parliament’s Regency Act of 1811. This Act allowed King George III’s eldest son, George, Prince of Wales, to rule as Prince Regent, a proxy monarch, because his father was too ill. This Regency lasted for nine years until King George III’s death and Prince George became King George IV in 1820.

What happened during the Regency era?

The Regency Era was one of THE most dramatic, fashionable, and literary periods in British history, even if we just focus on the Regency itself.

A brief Regency timeline of historical highlights

1811 – The Duke of Wellington holds off the French in the Peninsular War. Luddite uprisings. Glasgow weavers riot. Architect John Nash begins to develop the West End of London. 

1812 – Prime Minister Spencer Perceval is assassinated in the House of Commons. Shipping and territory disputes start the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom.

1813 – Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is published.

1814 – The Treaty of Paris ends one of the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon abdicates and is exiled to Elba. Gas lighting is introduced in England’s streets.

1815 –  Napoleon Bonaparte escapes from Elba. Battle of Waterloo.

1816 – A Year Without Summer. Arbiter of men’s fashion, Beau Brummel escapes his creditors by fleeing to France.

1817 – The death of Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Prince Regent, due to childbirth complications.

1818 – Queen Charlotte dies at Kew. Strike of Manchester cotton spinners. 

1819 – Peterloo Massacre. Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe is published.

1820 – The Regent, Prince George, becomes King George IV. 

What Made 1816 ‘The Year Without a Summer’?

In April 1815, Mount Tambora erupted, unleashing a significant amount of volcanic ash, blocking out sunlight. This led to global cooling and crop failure across Europe, which was still recuperating from the Napoleonic Wars. 

Other than Jane Austen, who were popular authors in the Regency era?

Jane Austen is one of the most well-known Regency-era novelists. Other classic Regency novels written by women include Marriage by Susan Ferrier, The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

How can I recreate Regency vibes at home?
