Worldbuilding is a big part of my writing. I love creating fantastical worlds with a hint of history. I love creating inventive magic systems. But it’s the characters and their relationships that are at the heart of what I write. They drive the stories forward. They sometimes drive the story in a direction I didn’t expect too, which is…fun? 😂 Well, it’s certainly true that the various relationships between the characters of The Planar Pages shape the core of the series. Clue: it’s heart-shaped.
Found Family
It’s no secret that found family is a favorite trope of mine. You can read my thoughts and recommendations in my blog post finding hope with the found family trope. But here we’re focusing on Fiona’s found family. Or at least the core members.
Mac – fae mixologist, welcoming owner of Fiona’s home from home, The Thread public house, and keeper of secrets.
“I want you to know I’d do anything in my power to make sure you are well.”
– FRAYED EDGES (book four)
Dodger – loyal smilodon member of The Travel Guild and formidable friend.
“I won’t say you’ve been working too hard because I know that’s frustrating. From one workhorse to another. Format has it you closed three cases last week alone. But you should make some time to enjoy yourself.”
– BETWEEN THE LINES (book one)
Gaili – caring faun and creative inventor with a heart of gold.
“Oh, Fi, you’re up!” said Gaili. “Do you mind if I call you Fi? It’s such a cute name for you. You really shouldn’t be up and walking in your condition.”
– BETWEEN THE LINES (book one)
The friend group grows across the series, adding to the inner circle with each book. And some relationships develop into romance.
Once-In-A-Lifetime Love
Some call them soulmates, or OTP’s (One True Pairing); folks who are meant to be together. In The Planar Pages, I call them Fiona and Richard. But their very first words to each other aren’t too promising…unless you love the trope “annoyance to lovers” that is.
“My luck runs over,” he muttered and looked her up and down in one swift motion. “Well, at least you had the sense not to scream.”
The voice held a tinge of accent that she couldn’t place. Fiona pursed her lips at the man’s insinuation, thoughts of his golden eyes pushed to the side. “Of course I didn’t scream. Who in the dark edge are you?” Fiona whispered.
– PRESSED (book three)
Some romance is obvious from the first meet-cute. Others seem destined to develop from friendship to romance. And sometimes it’s all of those at the same time.
To the happy throuple
You never know when love will blossom. Even rarer is a mutual romantic love developing between three people equally. Gaili’s big heart and her eagerness to help people directly lead to finding an abundance of romance in unexpected places, as Fiona points out:
“I think you have two people very interested in you, my friend. But how will you choose?” Fiona said, linking her arm with Gaili as they rounded the corner to the turner district.
For the first time Fiona saw an impish smile on her friends face as she answered quietly, “Why not both?”
– HARD BOUND (book two)
Who are the lucky two? You’ll know by the middle of the series. Why choose indeed.
Then there are the relationships that span lifetimes and might have a little something to do with the chaos Fiona faces. But that would be spoilers. 😉
All these relationships and more are waiting within The Planar Pages. If you’ve been waiting to binge the complete series, now is the time. Step into The Book to follow Fiona and friends from the first case to the final mystery with The Planar Pages Series Bundles & Boxset
